Ryon (Skorz)  > Street Scenes > Austin > State Capitol Grounds
It is ironic that a liberal city such as Austin is the governmental seat for a solid-red state such as Texas. In any case, the Texas capitol site is, like so many other things, best visited at night, where the shadows cast by the lights make the environs far more interesting.

Ryon (Skorz) > After seeing the Chronicles of Narnia, and being filled with the love and knowledge that Aslan died for our sins, my friend and I went down to the Texas Capitol grounds to see if we could get any good photos and perhaps convert some heathens to Aslanianity...

We were confronted with an unusual sight, ice in Austin (not in the form of a margarita)! Like the apes from 2001: A Space Odyssey in front of the mysterious black monolith, we thumped our chests and howled at this strange new phenominon, finally setting down enough to get a few shots.

The fountain and ice is illuminated with a flash strobe. The background is illuminated by mercury vapor/tungsten, to which the camera white balance is set. This keeps the background 'natural' in color, and gives the fountain the blue cast.
Ryon (Skorz) > The Texas Capitol Building is a stuffy and ponderous structure, affecting the mishmash of architectural styles that you would expect from 1800s frontier folk attempting to achieve or at least emulate some of the sophistication of an established civilzation and culture (sadly, with the exception of Austin itself, Texas still has not achieved this sophistication. Or any, for that matter).

That said, it also has lots of nooks and crannies that cast lots of interesting shadows.

This particular photo is an HDR composite of a correctly exposed dome and a severely underexposed facade, and a blown-out dome and a facade exposed for the shadows.
Ryon (Skorz) > As part of the holiday season's decorative motif, the city keeps only the dome of the capitol brightly lit, turning off the lights for the facade. This results in a correctly exposed dome, and lends only the barest hint of shape to the supporting walls, giving a more dramatic view of the building.
