Austin > Ryon (Skorz)  > Landscapes > Austin > Downtown
Austin's downtown offers a lovely skyline and many interesting buildings.

I have always found that many cities look plain, stark and ugly in the daytime and in the night time. However, there always seems to be that one magical moment between dark and light where the lights in the buildings turn on, and the sky still glows with the last remnants of sun. That is when the beauty of the city comes out.

Ryon (Skorz) > The grey concrete is cast in the green of mercury vapor while the metal garage door is given an orange cast by sodium vapor.
Ryon (Skorz) > You are in a maze of twisty passages, all alike.

(The north side of the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge, which crosses Town Lake in Austin).

This image is featured inside the CD case for the new 8 Systems release, "Interrupt". Check these guys out!
Ryon (Skorz) > Underneath the Lamar Blvd. bridge, looking south.

It is not possible to white-balance the sodium lamps, because they emit only a single, orange wavelength of light.

Another frame-in-a-frame experiment.
Ryon (Skorz) > The D70 does not handle intense reds very well, perhaps the only compelling reason I have to upgrade to the D200.
Ryon (Skorz) > The sun sets over lake Austin, the orange glow of the streetlamps matching the last rays of the sun as they reflect off the water.

Sadly, the christmas-type lights strung across the bridge's arches have been off for the past few months. I plan on recreating this shot when someone gets around to fixing them.
Ryon (Skorz) > Taken just nine minutes after the first photo of this subject, the glow in the sky fades and the lights' reflection in the water grows stronger, and the orange of sodium lights begins to dominate the scene, except for the lone out-of-place mercury/florescent lamp in the middle of the bridge. The smaller aperture and longer exposure used in this shot increases the smoothness of the water's surface.
Ryon (Skorz) > Storm clouds gather menacingly overhead, matching the equally menacing smokestacks of the old Seaholm Power Plant. This is the same building as featured in this photo.

I think this is my favorite of all the photos I have taken.
Ryon (Skorz) > The Lamar Blvd. Bridge across Town Lake is silhouetted against the setting sun.
Ryon (Skorz) > The crowd mills about the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge, waiting for the July 4th, 2006 fireworks show to begin. Meanwhile, the lack of cloud cover to the west allows the glorious last rays of the sun to brilliantly illuminate the buildings of downtown, and cast the entire scene in warm tones.
